Expectations shape everything, from how we see the day ahead to how we lead and build trust. We all carry expectations into our work, our relationships, and our daily routines, but too often they’re unspoken, unrealistic, or undefined. When that happens, conflict thrives and trust erodes.

Our environment, the world in which

we live and work, is a mirror of

our attitudes and expectations.

— Earl Nightingale

When you awoke this morning, what did you expect? When you began your workday or your rest day, what did you expect? When you encountered delays, distractions, or disruptions, what did you expect?

Undefined, unrealistic, or unexpressed expectations are habits of distrust that contribute to greater conflict, confusion, and contempt among faculty and families. Low trust contaminates our culture, our curriculum, and our capabilities to grow..

Expectation is the root

of all heartache.

— William Shakespeare

Elevating trust and finding greater joy in life begins with prepping our expectations. Dwelling in the past or in the future sadly limits what we can experience in the now.

The past is our limited memory of what happened, which only exists in our frail minds. The future is flawed expectations appearing real, which can be a source of great stress.

Mastering the Discipline of Presence is smart because real life happens in the now!

Lower your expectations of Earth.

This isn't heaven, so don't expect it to be.

— Max Lucado

Giving our full, uninterrupted attention—mind, body, and spirit—to the people and purpose right in front of us enables trust because they feel seen, heard, and valued. Clear expectations yield advantage, especially when combined with the maturity and wisdom to adjust as needed to stay on purpose through the peaks and pits of reality.

While defining expectations doesn't promise success, it does promise sure direction. Conscious clarity in our calling calibrates our core compass and capacity to conquer.

Be present with expectations.  Because no one is more inspiring than you with a clear vision.
