Mastery of Me: The Decisions that Create the Future
- Scott Barron
- January 12, 2026
Most of us want to grow. We want to get better at what we do, lead well, and make a difference. But growth doesn’t just show up on its own. It shows up when we’re willing to slow down, be honest with ourselves, and take responsibility for the things we can actually control.
At the end of the day, real progress starts with one simple question: Am I willing to work on me?
The only person you are destined to become
is the person you decide to be.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

What's in your growth plan for this year? What habits and skills will you learn?
Highly effective educators, in all roles across the campus, are distinguished by their intentionality in leading and growing themselves. Self-mastery is the key.
The inconvenient truth is that we are responsible for us, meaning we can't wait around for someone else to professionally develop us into our next upgrade.
And protecting status quo is a proven method to effectively becoming obsolete.
Life isn’t about finding yourself.
Life is about creating yourself.
— George Bernard Shaw
The better we know and lead ourselves, the better our life experience becomes.
Accept feedback as useful information to grow rather than judgment in attack.
Accept responsibility by listening, staying open, and agreeing on the next steps.
Accept instruction as a wise investment in the incredible future version of us.
Accept change in mindset and attitude as part of our own jouney to excellence.
We embrace teachability because it strengthens our learning and contribution.
Do not think of yourself more highly
than you ought, but rather think of
yourself with sober judgment.
― Romans 12:3
We are educators, blessed with so many gifts but smart enough to be humble.
A closed mind blinded by confidence clings to an illusion of exclusive expertise.
We are professionals, changing lives every day, so we don't wait around for growth and inspiration to happen. We get up, get to work, and make it happen!
We are wise stewards, with the the courage to confront ourselves and prepare for the next stage of life and leadership that will demand new levels of mastery.
Find victory in self-mastery. Choose to become the best version of you.
